Lamai Beach

Overview

Lamai is Samui's second beach town, about 15 minutes south of Chaweng. It has its own bar strip — smaller, cheaper, and more local in feel. The infamous Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks are here (naturally shaped rock formations that have become a quirky tourist landmark), and the nightlife strip nearby caters to a mix of budget travelers and regulars who prefer a less chaotic scene than Chaweng.

Prices are lower across the board — beer bars, food, and accommodation all come in cheaper. The girls are friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. A good option if Chaweng feels overwhelming, or if you want to base yourself somewhere quieter while still being within reach of the action.

The Scene

Lamai is Koh Samui's second beach and second nightlife area, south of Chaweng — smaller, more compact and a little more laid-back. It has its own strip of open-air beer bars and a few GoGo spots, enough for a relaxed night out without Chaweng's scale or crowds. It draws repeat visitors and longer-stay expats who prefer the quieter end of the island.

Like everywhere on Samui, the scene runs on the tourist season.

The Women

The women at Lamai are Thai, mostly mainland and Isaan, working the beer bars on a seasonal basis like the rest of the island. The smaller, quieter setting gives it a more relaxed, regulars' feel than Chaweng. English is tourist-pitched. A transient, seasonal workforce, as across Samui.
